William George Hylton Jolliffe, Sir

Born in London the eldest son of Rev. William John Joliffe.

Joined the 15th Hussars at the age of 18 and rose to Captain.

In 1821 William was created a Baronet of Merstham, Surrey.

1830 served as High Sheriff of Surrey. 

Went into politics stood as a Conservative for Petersfield and was a member of Parliament from 1830-32, 1837-1838 and finally 1841 to 1866. 
During his time in parliament, he was Unde Secretary of State for the Home Office 1852 and Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasury 1858.

In the creation of Hylton barony in 1866, William was raised to the Peerage.

William was married twice, Eleanor Paget (1808-1862) on the 8th October 1825, they had 11 children (6 sons and 5 daughters)

On 19th January 1867, William married a widow, Sophia Penelope Fox-Strange (nee  Sheffield)

William died on the 1st June 1876 in Mestham House, near Reigate, Surrey.
